This is a platform where Deaf young women and girls exhibit their talents and compete to be crowned as Miss Deaf Pride Zimbabwe. It is also an opportunity that we use to challenge common misconceptions about deafness, raise awareness about issues of concern to Deaf young women and girls as well as celebrate Deaf Culture and Sign language.
We provide Sign language lessons to interested individuals, groups and organisations interested in learning about working with the Deaf community. Our lessons are tailor made and provide participants with the opportunity to network and learn from Deaf people themselves.
At MDPZ we believe that Deaf people across the globe have the right to access comprehensive information on topical issues such as GBV, family planning, human rights, participating in electoral processes amongst other issues. We have therefore developed a number of advocacy strategies such as the #Myhandsmyvoice campaign which speaks of the right to access information in Sign language. This was accompanied by a documentary entitled “My hands my voice” which speaks of the needs, priorities and concerns of deaf young women in the country.
At MDPZ we pride ourselves using creative ways to educate Deaf young women and girls about SRHR related issues. We have conducted workshops and trainings focusing on the right to make choices about one’s sexuality, accessible information and services as well as capacitating service providers to respond to the needs of Sign language users.
We work with Deaf young women in jewellery making and have partnered with other organisations by young women to provide bespoke training on running successful business interventions.
We believe that persons with disabilities should be provided with comprehensive information on their rights in accessible formats. We are therefore working towards developing training for Sign language users on the provisions of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
